Reading and speaking-"Follow me" Primary Six

Primary Six

1. East and West

Here are some differences between people from the East and people from the West.

In the East, Chinese people use chopsticks. They have dim sum and drink Chinese tea. In the West, people use a knife and fork. They eat steak and potatoes and drink coffee. People in Hong Kong like both Chinese and Western food.

Which do you like more: food from the East or food from the West?

2. Family

The father of five children won a toy in a lucky draw.

He asked his children, “Who wants this present?” They all put up their hands. Then their father asked them, “Are you a good boy or a good girl? Do you listen to Mum and do everything she says?”

The five small children said together, “There's only one person who is that good in this family. It's you, Dad! You keep the toy!”

3. My Birthday

When I got home from school, no one remembered it was my birthday. Dad was reading the newspaper. Mum was busy cooking in the kitchen. My brother, Andy, was playing with his computer. I was very sad, so I went to the park alone.

When I came home, it was dark. Suddenly, the lights were turned on. There were presents, balloons and a birthday cake, “Happy Birthday, Peter!” everyone said.

4. My Best Friend

Peter is my best friend. We have a lot of fun together.
We have been in the same class since Primary Four. We always sit together at the back because we are the tallest in class. Peter is very kind and helps me a lot.
Once, I left my lunch box at home. I had no money to buy anything and I was very hungry. When peter knew that, he gave me half of his sandwich. It was yummy!

5. My Favourite Teacher

Miss Wong is the best teacher I have ever had. She taught me Chinese and Music in Primary Five.

I was never bored in Miss Wong's class. She told us many funny stories and everyone enjoyed her lessons. Even Billy, a very naughty boy in the class, paid attention all the time!

Miss Wong was also very kind and caring. She always listened and helped us with our problems, she often said, “Never give up!”

6. Caring for Pets

When you see an unwanted pet, do you feel sad? Does it make you angry when you hear about people hurting animals?

Every day, there are people who give up their pets. When they first buy their pet, they play with it and care for it, but after some time, they are too busy to look after their pet or feel bored with it. So they give their pet away or leave it by the side of the road.

7. Hong Kong Wetland Park

My family is going to Hong KongWetlandPark this Saturday. The Park is in the NewTerritories. We will travel there by West Rail and Light Rail.

Dad ordered tickets online while Mum and I made a list of things to take on the trip: hats, paper fans, a camera, bottles of water and some sandwiches.

I can't wait to take photos of interesting animals. I really want to see ‘Put Put’, the famous crocodile.

8. Typhoon

Typhoon Signal No. 8 was hoisted yesterday. I stayed at home and watched the weather report. There were some landslides and floods near my place. The typhoon blew down many trees and the rain was heavy. Some people were hurt. Many people became homeless. Luckily, no one died.

9. One of My Best Friends

Mary is one of my best friends. We have been friends since we're in Primary Three. She is a friendly and generous person. She always shares things with me. It is very kind of her to help me with my homework. We belong to the school dancing team so we often practice dancing together after school.

10.Sports Day

Next Friday will be our school's Sports Day. It will start at ten o'clock in the morning and finish at half past four in the afternoon. It will be held in the Yuen Long Stadium. All students will come to school earlier and gather together on the covered playground first. All parents will be invited to come and join. Prizes will be given to the winners of each competition.

11. Joyce's special presents

Yesterday, Joyce fell and broke her leg. The doctor told her to rest at home for two months. She was upset because she could not go to school. She also missed playing volleyball with her good friends, Simon and Kelly.

Simon and Kelly decide to give Joyce a surprise. After school, they visited her. They brought along her favourite DVDs and comics. Kelly even fold lucky stars for her. Joyce was pleased to see her friends! She liked the presents too!

12. Healthy Toys

Children enjoy playing with toys. Most girls like dolls while boys like robots, building blocks, puzzles, marbles, electronic toys and computer games are also popular toys.

Some toys – the hula hoop and the skipping rope, for example – allow children to exercise and build strong muscles.

Do you know that some toys can help children to learn? Children have to think of solutions to problems while they play with these toys. Sometimes, adults find it difficult to solve the problems too!

13. Why do people read ?

My father reads because he wants to learn about the world. He reads the newspaper every morning. My mother cooks for the family, so she usually reads cookbooks, my younger brother, David, doesn't like reading. He only reads when he has a test or a project to do. But I love reading! I read because it's fun and I enjoy it. It helps me forget about my problems too!

14. Clubs and Activities

Ring, ring!” School is over, but not for Tommy. Now he has his clubs and activities! On Mondays, Tommy goes to the Music Club. He is learning a song called “Little Boy Blue”. On Wednesdays, he goes to the Sports Club. He likes to swim in the pool or play basketball with his friends. On Fridays, he goes to the Cooking Club and makes snacks. He likes this activity most because he can eat for free!

15. Mary's Neighbourhood

Last year, Mary moved to a new home. It's close to the MTR station, so she can get to school quickly. There's a shopping centre nearby, with a cinema, a food court, a supermarket and many shops.

Next to her home is a park. In the morning, old people like to exercise there. In the afternoon, children like to play and run around. But at night, it's nice and quiet!

16. Keep Clean

Keeping yourself clean is very important. When you wake up in the morning, brush your teeth and clean your face. Wash your hands before eating and after going to the toilet.

At lunchtime, don't share your lunch box with other students. After eating, put the lunch box away and wash your hands.

If you are sick, wear a mask when you leave home. If you have a runny nose, use a tissue.
